World wide, in history, how many deaths have been caused by yersinia pestis?

(bacteria causing plague)

The original plague killed more than 100 million people. For accurate statictics, I advise you to contact the CDC.

It's entirely possible that it could pop up again. It was never FULLY erradicated.

millions and millions

Interesting question, and the answer might not be as clear as some people think.

Not to sound like a conspiracy theoriests, but you might be interested in some of the latest epidemiological theories about the black plague. There is now newer thinking that the black death (what most people associate with the plague) was not caused by yersinia pestist, but was actually a viral hybrid, similar to ebola and HIV/AIDS. Epidemilogical records, descriptions of symptoms, and the fact that some people who are immune to the "plague" are also immune to HIV (as determined by genetic data), it does fit.

So the answer? Maybe not as many as you think.
