Can you send dental x-rays to other dentists?

I was suppose to get braces, but it turns out, my teeth are too messed up for my normal dentist to handle so he's referring to an orthodontist, but he's telling me they'll probably want their own x-rays. I took x-rays and even the clay models of my teeth with this guy and he's telling me they want their own. My insurance only covers one x-ray a year for me. Anyway don't i own those x-rays anyway and can't i send them to whoever

u own those xrays and i think most dentists want u to take ur xrays with you wen u change dentists so u betta get dem xrays to ya nu dentizt/ortho

If the x-rays and molds are recent then they should just use what you already have....sounds like he just wants to charge for additional x-rays and molds.

You can request copies to be sent to your new orthodontist and your dentist must comply as you have legal right to do this. However, many (maybe most) orthodontist use Panarex x-rays which your general dentist doesn't as this shows the whole dentition and their relationship to each other at once. The orthodontist might also need other diagnostic views. Orthodontia is expensive but in many cases it is necessary to prevent tooth loss in the future...and make your smile look nice!

orthodontists usually take different types of x-rays, that may cover the whole side of the skull, or they take a OPG which is the whole stretch of your teeth from Left to right. you have the right to access your x-rays, but your dentist has the right to hold them, in fact he has to keep hold of it for 11years over here in England, it may differ where you are from. but they can release them to different professional for periods of time. but i suspect that your x-rays wont be enough for your orthodontist to get a full view of your jaw alignment etc... because dentist dont like you to have unnecessary radiation exposure caused by x-rays, and if they can pass them on they usually do...

Yes you can send records from another office. Ask your dentist to make copies of your xrays and mail them to your orthodontist. You may have to pay a small fee for the copies. The ortho may still want to take a different type of xray though (panoral, the machine goes around your head).
