Are building x-rays dangerous?

I was asked last minute to not to return to my apartment between certain hours of the morning so that they can do some building x-rays for safety reasons. Well sure enough I am upset for the less then practical time frame and need to cancel my internet hook up/ ac maintenance but over all I am wondering if it's dangerous and if there is a place I can read up on it a bit more!

Thanks!

They must be x-raying the structural elements of the building. It is unsafe to be there during the process. But afterwards, there is no risk to you because no residual xrays will remain.

If you are advised to leave the building because they are performing x-ray readings then I would strongly suggest that you do so! X-rays can cause cancer, and can damage reproductive systems (ie causing infertility and increasing the risk of birth defects). X-ray scans used for medical purposes are done by professional radiologists with carefully measured doses (and you'll notice they never x-ray the reproductive region). The link below gives a great (and very simple) explanation of what X-rays can do to you.

In contrary to what anisha said, we do x-ray the genital area if we absolutely have to. We usually try to shield this area, but if it will obstruct or field of interest we can, think of abdominal or pelvis x-rays. Most likely they are x-raying for structural purposes and the x-rays do dissapate as soon as they are shut off. I don't know why you would have to cancel your internet hook-up and a/c unless you were going to in the first place or were told to by the apartment. I'm not real sure about a place to read up on the subject, but listen to them and don't go into the apartment during that time. X-rays are harmful at large doses for long periods of time, but for medical purposes are ok. The dose limits are fairly high, especially for the public (meaning someone that isn't around x-ray all the time). If it was so harmful, I'd be out of a job. You could do a search for structural radiography, that might turn up a few informational sites. Hope this helped
