How many X-Rays does one get before it's harmful?

I know X-Rays on rare occasion aren't terrible - how many does one get before it can cause damage?

Thanks!

There is no "magic number," that is why having x-rays is always a risk versus benefit situation. Only get the c-ray if your doctor feels that it is really important.

Some x-rays exams have a whole lot less radiation than others. Well trained x-ray personnel also know ways to choose radiation exposures which give the patient less of the harmful type of radiation and more of the less harmful radiation. Facilities with good equipment also enable high quality exams to be performed using less radiation.

Some parts of the body are more susceptible to damage from radiation, that is why you should always ask for shielding (of your thyroid located in the front of your neck), and your gonads) whenever possible.

Discuss your concern of radiation with your doctor, he/she might be able to work around it.

The "magic number" you're looking for doesn't exist. Ionizing radiation in all its forms (including sunlight) causes an increased risk of genetic damage that's cumulative over your lifetime. The more radiation, the higher the risk, but there isn't some magic switch that flips on at a certain point.
