I have had many x-rays over the past 15 years. Can this be harmful? |
I was shot in the face in a grocery store robbery, so most of these x-rays have been to by lower jaw. I have a few a year and I have had several ct scans. X-rays don't linger in your body. They are in and out. What they MAY do is cause a change in the cell structure. This could lead to more serious medical conditions, or your body could heal itself. Since most of the x-rays were directed to your face, the greatest risk of damage is to your thyroid and to your eyes. It is too late to worry about the past, but if you need more x-rays, ask if a thyroid shield can be used. Because of the positions needed to obtain the radiographs, a shield may obscure the area of interest, but it is worth asking! A good technologist would either give you one or explain why you could not wear it. As long as your wore the lead based apron, you are a-ok. |
