Why when you get x rays done they put a shield to protect you?

protect you from what why ist hat and why do they say not to wear metal when taking x rays or scans????????

The lead in the shield protects you and does not get in the way of the view they need for seeing inside you. Jewelry can obscure the view so they have to make rules about it. With scans it is different, since they use magnetic resonance and depending on the machine, any metal can cause damage to you or the machine.

the metal shows up on the xrays ie: necklace shows up on a chest xray. The shield is to protect your reproductive organs from the radioactivity.

The lead in the shielding protects other parts of your body from the x-rays. They are quite dangerous, which is why an x-ray picture is done in a fraction of a second. X-rays can cause cancer.

X-rays do not penetrate metal. If you were wearing metal, what was underneath the metal would not show on the picture.

You cannot wear metal when having an MRI, because the magnetic radiation from the scan will attract the metal quite strongly. And if that metal happens to be a steel plate in your head... then you're in deep trouble!

The metal shows up that is why they don't want you to wear any. They bloody should give you some protection. They can cause cancer. I won't have any more now.

This is all about placement. We don't want you to be wearing any metal, in the area of interest, during a x-ray. This is because that metal can cover up anatomy and pathology on the image, not because the metal might harm you.

For example, for a chest x-ray, we ask you to remove nipple piercings and necklaces and any metal which might be on your shirt. We don't care if you are wearing jeans, as we are not taking an image of your pelvis. Bracelets, rings, earrings or facial piercings do not need to be removed. During a chest x-ray, we will place a leaded shield over your pelvis to protect your ovaries or testicles from the radiation. This was more important 20 years ago, when the doses of radiation and the scatter radiation was much higher. Improvements in equipment, x-ray film, x-ray intensifying screens, and even the developing process have allowed us to lower our radiation doses significantly, but we still use the leaded apron, more for the patient's peace of mind.

If you are having an abdominal x-ray, we don't care if you are wearing a necklace or nipple rings or bracelets etc. We would ask you to remove a belly button ring, as that is in the area of interest, in this case. You would need to remove jeans, due to the zippers and buttons and rivets in the area of interest. We would also probably not use a lead apron, for an abdominal and pelvic x-ray, as it would cover the area of interest.
