Wrist injury- what treatment? |
I was walking at my work, with a big bag of dog food obscuring my view and I smacked my wrist straight into the side of a shelf, full force of my body + 35lbs of weight behind it at a fast walk. It took off a few layers of skin and now it is very very, very tender. It is swollen and I can feel the bruise forming under my skin, but no color (yet). The injury is about 1-2 inches from the end of the wrist bone on my left arm. I am having trouble grasping things tightly because when I flex my hand it aches and depending on how I move my hand I get sharp pains eminating from the sore spot up through my hand. I don't think it is serious, but would it be wise to wrap it to help support it, or just let it heal on its own without a wrap? I have been taking some Ibuprofen and icing it. at this point, where a wrist splint to let it calm down, and heal any possible ligament, tendon damage. ice it, 20 mins on, 20 mins off, it should help with the swelling. continue with the nsaids as needed. after 7-10 days, see if it's still swollen and painful. if so, see a hand and wrist specialist (in an orthopaedic setting) and they'll first get xrays to look for any fracture. if none is present, may be soft tissue damage - to what extent may be relied upon further work-up (testing). so give it a week of immobilization in the wrist splint and follow-up with a hand/wrist surgeon (or if one is not close by, any orthopaedic surgeon can help) if not calming down. oh, and the problem with grasping may be nerve related which could be due to the swelling you're having. when the swelling dies down, try gripping things again, it should be remotely better. the nerve could have been hit, or the swelling is compressing on that nerve. give it 7-10 days of immobilization, ice, ibuprofen and go from there. |
