If you fracture your wrist as a child is it more susceptible to strain in later life?

I'm right handed and I fractured my right wrist when I was about 8. Over the years since then I get a really annoying strain in that wrist. It's only when I use it fairly intensively eg. typing for hours or playing guitar, but it seems to come up all the time and quite easily. Is it possible that the strain is at all due to the fracture or is it more likely to be repetitive strain injury?

You may have developed post-traumatic arthritis, which can happen, especially after injuries to the wrist and can cause the type of pain you describe, further provoked by excess use. Often a simple wrist splint or brace, available from sports shops and chemists will help, as will a heat pad on the affected wrist. You can also try non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen. Good luck.

Yes. My daughter broke her wrist when she was around 8 years old and under a lot of use, or poor weather conditions (changes in atmospheric pressure), it causes her tenderness, pain and frustration. She uses ibuprofen and says it helps.

Yes,i am left handed and broke my wrist at about the same age,I get a lot pain through repetitive strain, but the fracture never really mends properly,so I suffer( I am an electrician so turning screws etc. is pretty much my living ).

The sight of an old fracture is often followed by arthritis later. Taking neurophene will help. See your doctor you may need an x-ray, just to see whats happening. Sometimes you may need to wear a wrist support for a short while. You can buy one in your local chemist. They really do help. ......Good Luck.

Although the fracture may have something to do with the strain, I think using it intensively is really what is causing the pain. Slow down a little. The older we get, the more we ache.
Have it checked out just to be on the safe side.

It is pretty unlikely that a fracture sustained as early as aged 8 years will leave behind and lasting damage. Repair and recovery should be complete, suggesting your current problems are unrelated.

If your wrist healed well and there were no complications then it is unlikely that an injury sustained at that age would cause a problem now. It is quite normal to get pain in a hand or wrist that is used intensively, you may well have some repetitive strain injury. It might be an idea to get your Dr to check it out.
Good luck.

There always seems to be a weakness once you have fractured something.
If it were me I would wrap it up in elastic bandage for a while to keep it both supported and warm. That should ease if for a while at least.
