Borderline Personality Disorder?

My brother had BPD. Today he broke many things in house like cabinets, glasses, furniture. He also expressed anger on my mom by beating her. He did cut his wrist too.

He came outside house and started to fight with people.

How should we control his anger and rage? Help will be appreciated.

Hi--Borderline personality disorder is often a devastating mental condition, both for the people who have it and for those around them.Treatment for borderline personality disorder has improved in recent years with the adoption of techniques specifically aimed at people with this disorder. Treatment includes:

Psychotherapy:This is the core treatment for BPD. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) was designed specifically to treat the disorder. Generally conducted through individual, group and phone counseling, DBT uses a skills-based approach to teach people how to regulate their emotions, tolerate distress and improve relationships.

Medications:Medications can't cure BPD, but they can help associated problems, such as depression, impulsivity and anxiety. Medications may include antidepressant, antipsychotic and antianxiety medications.

Hospitalization: At times, people with BPD may need more intense treatment in a psychiatric hospital or clinic. Hospitalization can also keep them safe from self-injury.
Because treatment can be intense and long term, people face the best chance for success when they find mental health providers with experience treating BPD.

When he should seek medical advice:
People with borderline personality disorder often feel misunderstood, alone, empty and hopeless. They're typically full of self-hate and self-disgust. They may be fully aware that their behavior is destructive and be distressed about it. Impulsivity may cause problems with gambling, driving or even the law. You may find that many areas of his life are affected, including relationships, work or school.

If you notice these things in your brother, talk to them about seeing a doctor or mental health provider. But keep in mind that you can't force someone to seek help. If the relationship has you unduly distressed, you may find it helpful to see a therapist yourself.

He needs an anger management class.

Call the cops- call the mental hospital. He needs treatment for that anger. He needs to be on serious drugs.

your brother had or your brother has BPD. well i think he needs to be put on meds for his sake, your sake and your mums sake. keep an eye on him coz if he cut his wrist he might do other dangerous stuff.

51/50 He is a danger to himself and others at the moment, he needs to be treated by licensed professionals, AND placed on medication that will help him NOW. As soon as he shows signs of improvement he could "come home", but until then He and Everyone else is or may be in danger.
As a lifer of depression and bouts of rage, I know what I speak of and the importance of Bro getting the help he needs right now, not next week or month!
Good Luck.

I have BPD and when I cause scenes like that......
it's because i feel that people care about everything but me.

so if i break a door and a plate.....it seems people care about the broken stuff....and they dont care about me..... but I'm broken! and no one cares about me!!!! they just care about the STUFF thats broken.

so yes, this is HIS problem not yours......but maybe if he's doing that....... act as thought you care about HIM and ask him whats wrong ask him what you can do to help.....and never mind the broken stuff til later.

your brother is more important than broken things.....you need to make that clear becuase he probably is doing all that stuff for attention..... becuase he doesnt feel like anyone cares

So if he breaks stuff and you complain about the broken stuff....you're kinda proving his point - which is that people don't care about him, they care about everything else.

So tell him you want to know what's wrong.
Tell him you want to fix whats wrong
You want to fix HIS problem
THEN worry about the broken stuff AFTER

oh yea and remember....BPD is not a choice.....it's not something they want to do they don't want to act out......

it's an illness and it's not their fault

As another BPD sufferer, I totally agree and relate to Bunchkin's comments....that is exactly how I am. The need for affirmations of love and care is so huge....it's when I perceive that I'm not lovable and worthless that I act out the worst...triggered by either real or perceived rejection for me as a person. We need this kind of affirmation and validation on spoken words and other acts way far more than people can imagine....it's bizarre, I've been told.
