Staph infection causing open wounds to itch and burn. What can be done to relieve the itch?

My cousin got a staph infection. I feel so badly for her, the med. her doc. gave her isnt really working and it itches and burns her A LOT. not to mention it looks terrible. She fell on a palm tree and got the horrid wound and now it is burning and itching along with all the other open wounds on her body. What can she use besides benadryl? What are some good ways to help relieve her pain and itch?

Cant go back to the dr...no insurance. too expensive.
