Can irrigating wounds spread infection?

Can irrigation spread infection, for example MRSA? Would it damage reparing tissue? Are there any sites/journals to back this up? I can't find anything!

Question #1: When irrigation is done correctly by licensed personnel, it doesn't spread infection.

Question #2: See Question #1

Question #3: The irrigation solution is usually normal saline. Irrigation doesn't damage tissue in any way. It can help debride (remove) necrotic (dead) tissue, keep the wound site clean and prevent secondary infection.

Question #4: I know of no specific sites about this but if you have the time, check issues of the American Journal of Nursing and Nursing 2007. Also run searches for other nursing and wound care journals.

If you can't find information stating why a wound should not be irrigated, it's because there is no reason. Not all wounds need irrigation. Deending on the size, depth and condition of the wound bed, cleaning with normal saline and a gauze sponge is also sufficient. Report It
