Women with low body fat... what are the health risks? |
My gf's body fat is 17% which I think is very, very low. She looks good & doesn't look unhealthy or anything but people in the gym have said there could be health risks for women with low body fat, but haven't/ cant say exactly what. I heard that if a womans body fat is too low it can stop her periods which may sound ok but its not a good thing. Gymnasts have this problem apparently. If I were her I'd talk to my doctor about it as it may effect her normal cycle & then who knows what. Im no expert but thats what I heard. Health risk that some fat chick may kick her rear 17% is lower than the average for a female, but not low enough to cause any adverse health effects. the problem with low body fat is a lot of your hormones require a certain amount of fat to work properly. good rule of thumb-as long as she is getting her monthly visitor on schedule, she has an adequate amount of fat. her bones and mainly the vital organs need a certain amount of fat around them to keep them safe. we are not just made of muscle we are made of fat and water also. a good balance of all is what is needed to be healthy. |
