Whooping cough from a vaccine?

Just a day or two ago, I got the dtap vaccine.

Today, I started coughing and exhibited signs of whooping cough such as coughing until lungs are empty, phlegm buildup, etc..

Is it possible that this is a result from the vaccine (which ironically is supposed to immunize you from it)? I'm not 100% positive I have it, but I didn't start coughing until after I got my shot.

Any input would be appreciated.

No need to insult. :\

I haven't gone around telling anyone, it was just a question that came up because I have been coughing to the point of complete oxygen deprivation in intervals.

Thanks for the replies, I know for some vaccines, you get mild side effects of the true virus but I did research on the whooping cough and it didn't say anything about experiencing like side effects so I wanted to ask around.

You do not have the disease. It is not unheard of for people to have the symptoms of a disease they are vaccinated against (like the "flu shot"). People mistake their feeling crappy and having the symptoms for actually contracting the disease when in reality the symptoms of any disease are a great deal of the body's fault. The symptoms are the body responding to an immune system challenge and trying to rid itself of what it perceives to be a disease. So please, don't worry, your symptoms should subside shortly and you will then be immunized .

P.S. M谩ire Siobh谩n, be careful who you call a knucklehead. Pertussis or whooping cough is caused by Bordetella pertussis, a bacterium not a virus. An additional folly for you was your mention of the phrase "dead virus." Viruses do not meet the definition of a living organism. Please remember, it's not nice to make fun of someone wanting an honest answer when you, yourself cannot manage to get your information accurate.

I think it is possible because you are given the disease, however you are given a dead form of the disease so I dont think it is common.

it's normal. Happens all the time when people get vaccines. It will immunize you. Which is basically what is going on now.

Reactions to vaccine are generally mild and are usually limited to a fever, body aches or tenderness at the injection site, reguardless what the vaccine was given for. That is the bodies response to a "foreign" substance being introduced into it. Some people feel that they have gotten sick from the virus in the vaccine, but most immunizations use a deactivated form that does not cause the illness. Whenever a person has a more severe reaction, the doctor needs to be notified.

Your breathing difficulties are more likely caused by an allergic reaction to some ingredient that was a part of the shot(the virus, the fluid carrier, the preservative). It is important for your doctor to know this for two reasons. First, a note needs to be made in your record so that any future immunizations are given with caution, or maybe even held. Second, when a vaccine is given, the lot number would have been written down in your record. That lot number needs to be called to the manufacturer so that if other individuals have had problems too, the rest of the lot can be pulled before being given to other people.

Please note that the above holds true whether the vaccine is made with (for) a virus or a bacteria ... they still mostly use a deactivated form of the virus/bacteria in the vaccine as it is safer. Many years ago they did use active forms of the virus/bacteria, but people who received the vaccines had many more problems.

The answer to your question is yes. You are not the first and indeed there have been entire breakouts of whooping cough in only vaccinated people. You see, vaccines are not all they are cracked up to be.
Time to open your eyes.

Knucklehead. You probably have a cold or the flu. The vaccine for whooping cough is made from inactivated (dead) virus, and you cannot get the illness from the vaccine. It does immunize you against the disease. No irony involved. Take two Tylenol and go get a good night's sleep. Don't go around telling people you think you have whooping cough.
