If you have had whooping cough before, can you get it again?

I have heard that you don't get it again if you have already had it, just like chicken pox, but I'm not sure. I had a really bad episode of it last summer, kept coughing for one month, complete with the "whooping" noise it's known for. Since then, every time I've gotten sick, the coughing keeps up a while after I've gotten better. And I can't help this little fear that it may be coming back. It's not life-threatening or anything, but it is extremely annoying and takes a real toll on my throat and lungs.

Whooping cough is different from the pathogenesis of chiken pox. Chiken pox is viral in origin while whooping cough is bacterial (caused by Bordetella pertussis). Just like any other bacterial infection, there is chance of getting it again if your body did not produce antibody against this. And most microorganism can mutate in a different genetic make-up so that your body will not recognize them and sometimes they can be worse. But they can be treated with anitbiotics. For prevention, you can take Vitamin C to improve your body defenses and eat fruits. Hope this helps. God bless!

Yea my son has had it twice. He gets croup every time the weather changes

when I was a kid I got it all the time

sucks

In my country babies are being inoculated against whooping cough. I also had this inoculation as a baby. Yet I developed a mild form of whooping cough at the age of 4.
Having had whooping cough usually means that your body has enough antibodies to prevent you from getting the disease again. The same with inoculations... but in rare cases being inoculated or having had the disease doesn't mean that you won't catch the disease. But though I got the disease even I had been given the inoculation, I'm glad that I'd had that injection, because even though you write it's not life threatening (for adults that is) it can be life threatening for babies and children!

Yes, you can have it more than once. Sounds like you might need a specialized aerosolized drug call racemic epinephrine, which will target the cells in your throat to reduce swelling there. You can only get that from a doctors or emergency room visit, so you need to see one of the two the next time you start coughing.
