Whooping cough, or pertussis, can be serious in anybody. It used to be called the hundred-day cough, so there's an idea.

The main concern is that the distinctive barking cough is so overwhelming that breathing becomes exhausting. We usually worry the most about small kids, because they have smaller airways and tire more easily, but anyone can wind up in the hospital.
