What is the causative agent of whooping cough?

A bacteria (Bordetella pertussis) which is why pets can get it. Viruses, rabies is an exception, don't generally cross species lines, but bacteria can. I had a cat once that caught whooping cough. It lived.

Bordatella Pertussis

Pertussis is caused by a gram negative bacteria, Bordatella Pertussis. Children are immunized, but two thirds of cases are in adults.

If i am not mistaken, whooping cough is associated with Diphtheria, a bacterial infection. Anybody can correct me if I'm wrong

Bordetella pertussis it is a bacteria. You should get checked out by a doctor if you think you have it because it is highly contagious. Most children in the USA are immunized against it, but immunizations wear off.

It is caused by certain species of the bacterium Bordetella鈥攗sually B. pertussis, but some cases are caused by B. parapertussis.

Pertussis was recognizably described as early as 1578 by Guillaume de Baillou (1538-1616), but earlier reports date back at least to the 12th century. B. pertussis was isolated in pure culture in 1906 by Jules Bordet and Octave Gengou. The complete B. pertussis genome of 4,086,186 base pairs was sequenced in 2002.
