What is the causative agent of whooping cough?

A bacteria (Bordetella pertussis) which is why pets can get it. Viruses, rabies is an exception, don't generally cross species lines, but bacteria can. I had a cat once that caught whooping cough. It lived.

If i am not mistaken, whooping cough is associated with Diphtheria, a bacterial infection. Anybody can correct me if I'm wrong

B. pertussis was isolated in pure culture in 1906 by Jules Bordet and Octave Gengou. The complete B. pertussis genome of 4,086,186 base pairs was sequenced in 2002.
