How doyou no if you have the whooping cough?

my friend is scared that she has it

Whooping cough can affect people of any age. Before vaccines were widely available, the disease was most common in infants and young children.

Now that most children are immunized before entering school, the higher percentage of cases is seen among adolescents and adults.

Symptoms in an adult:

runny nose
slight fever (102?F or lower)
severe, repeated coughs that:
make breathing difficult
result in vomiting

produce a high-pitched "whooping" sound when a person takes a breath

cause a short loss of consciousness
diarrhea

However, please tell your friend to see a doctor asap, as symptoms usually last for six weeks. :)

Usually with babies not adult. Symptoms staccato cough with pauses to take in deep breath then the cycle continues. Babies have drooling at this time. Treatment: There is no cure just erythromycin to lessen communicability period.

These are the symptoms of whooping cough:

runny nose
sneezing
mild cough
low-grade fever

After about 1 to 2 weeks, the dry, irritating cough evolves into coughing spells. During a coughing spell, which can last for more than a minute, the child may turn red or purple. At the end of a spell, the child may make a characteristic whooping sound when breathing in or may vomit. Between spells, the child usually feels well.

Although it's likely that infants and younger children who become infected with B. pertussis will develop the characteristic coughing episodes with their accompanying whoop, not everyone will. However, sometimes infants don't cough or whoop as older children do. They may look as if they're gasping for air with a reddened face and may actually stop breathing for a few seconds during particularly bad spells.
