Do whiplash injuries ever heal? |
I had a car accident about a year ago that gave me pretty severe whiplash. And I still occasionally suffer from the symptoms I innitally felt after the accident. Some days have very mild symptoms, other days prevent me form even getting out of bed. None of my doctors told me any long term side effects. I am not on medication for it. Is this common? Should I get it checked out? What sometimes happens is that the muscles develop knots where the injury occurred, and the knots become hardened or partly calcified, which can pull the spine out of alignment. These knots usually do not go a way on their own. They require some effort to get rid of them through either regular therapeutic massage and stretching, or several treatments with ultrasound to soften the tissues. You might consider visiting either a chiropractor or massage therapist. I would see a chiropractor. They fixed mine from a car accident. I think you will always get a little irritation from it from time to time. But I couldn't move my head a few days at all after my accident. They fixed me up. Medication doesn't help fix a thing. The alignment in your neck is off from the whiplash. The chiropractor can fix it. yes...you should get checked out...you could have a pinched nerve or something else.....my old whiplash kicks up some now and then but advil will take care of it....I would definately call the doc...good luck My dad had an whiplas injury when he was young. He is 52 now and the problem still persists. I dont think that it will ever leave. When you get whiplash your neck is literally whipped forward than back. This causes over stretching of all the muscles and that's where the problems lies. It takes some time for those muscles to recover from the stretch and when they do as someone else said you develop knots in certain places. You will need to get them worked on by a good massage therapist. Not just someone who gives massage but a message therapist. Some chiropractors have one on staff or one they recommend. After getting some massage the chiropractor should be able to give you some adjustments that help. He'll take some x-rays and will be able to tell you what looks like a problem area. If you follow his recommendations you should be feeling better before long. Believe me it's worth it to get your neck back on track or it will get worse as you get older. You might want to take some arnica while it's getting better. You can get the tiny pellets that go under your tongue and/or arnica gel to rub into the area. Here's some links: As some of the above said, you have done damage to your soft tissue and hard tissue. That takes time. You need to make sure that your spine is properly aligned and your body is healing correctly. A chiropractor can assist. Massage may help it feel better as well as well as relaxing muscles that may now be working harder than they should |
