Should the Goverment pay for Electric wheelchairs for poeple who need them ?

Some poeple need Electric wheelchairs to give them a real quality of life, just so they can live a proper life yet family and friends need to do fund raising to get them! I saw a programme abaout a boy who needs one and it will cost 拢 1300. this goverment would rather give money to themsekves in pay rises and give it away to other countries rather than give to our own disabled or ex service personel!

My brother has been severly physically disabled from birth - can't walk, talk, feed himself etc and we have battled for the whole of his life over wheelchairs and aid provision. If you do manage to get a chair provided by your local authority it is a nightmare to try and get the correct seating inserts to enable the correct support for the individual and even worse is trying to get a chair repaired. A disabled person can be left for months without their chair dur to a small part not being 'available' or they will just take months and provide nothing in it's place. The chairs are badly built, liable to breakdown and a nightmare to keep going. Trying to get help for disable people is just a nightmare - particularly when children become adults and then become ignored - it's always young wheelchair users who are portrayed and campaigns etc but as soon they turn 16 or 18 they get forgotten and shoved to the very back of anyone's minds. You have to fight tooth and nail to get basic provision for anyone with a disablement and people need to fight for those who are unable to do it themselves. Keep fighting keep putting the pressure on so that everyone who needs one has a right to a wheelchair suitable for them or whatever aids they require to have even a basic quality of life.

I think it should.

My mother has one and her quality of life is immeasurably better than if she didn't. Our societies will and should be judged by how we treat the least of those among us. Until the people rise up and demand that their elected officials place our priorities as their priorities, then we have a duty to vote them out of office for their arrogance.

I think they should but it also depends on their financial situation.

My girlfriend has Muscular Dystrophy and although she has a manual wheelchair, so she can get around town, she needs someone to take her around as she does not have the muscle power to propel herself.

She would love to be able to pop out to the local shops, the park, etc on her own but as we live in quite a hilly area it would be impossible without an electric chair.

The government do provide such wheelchairs but only for those who are housebound and cannot get themselves from one room to the next. Because my GF has SOME mobility, she is not entitled to an electric wheelchair. Although I am working and bring home a reasonable income, the costs involved to get one are astronomical. Even a grant to subsidise electric wheelchairs for those who need them would be a step in the right direction.

do it in USA fro ssi and ssdi . but its hard to qualify.
sure its done in your slow govt system too.
see if there is an advocacy agency fro disabled to help your friend. file appeals if turned down.
contact he support group fro the condition like ms mg cp chronic pain. see if they have advocates and support and info available.

we have federal lawsADA to help disabled. cause some want those who need help to suffer UNABLE.. so they dont have to deal with brown grass patches and potholes and no community parks and other fun . priorities for those taxes ,man!
IGNORE THOSE EVIL IGNORANT PIGS LIKE BELOW,

The job of a government is to act for the best interest of a whole. To help the masses make decisions that individually make sense, but collectively damage, is absolutely absurd. No, government should not help pay for an electric wheelchair. Buying my cousin a car would seriously help his standard of living, but why should it be up to the government to give him a car? If you feel they are giving themselves too much money, then you run for office, and pay yourself what you think you should make for your service. Besides that, pay raises don't go into effect until the next term at the minimum. That means no one who voted yes on it, is guaranteed to get it. By giving money to other countries, you are saying, we helped you when you needed it, how about helping us when we need it. And at the very least, please hit spell check.

Of course they should! I live in California (US) & it takes some time & a lot of paperwork that must be signed by several Doctors & Specialists in order for disabled people to get electric chairs, but once a person gets one, I notice they seem much happier because they can get around without the help of others & being independent is important after you lose the use of your legs & your arms don't have the strength to manuever the regular chairs around uneven sidewalks & curbs!

I am a disabled woman, and I would love an electric wheelchair but they are very expensive. The wheelchair I have needs someone to push it as I can not have a one that I can wheel around myself.I have osteoarthritis in my shoulders so am not strong enough to use a self propelled chair.I feel a burden sometimes as I have to ask family and friends to take me anywhere I need to go.
The way I view the problem is "There are always people worse off than yourself" and really I think younger people need to be helped more than me.I could use my disability living allowance to buy a scooter but I have come to rely on the money, and use it for taxi fares to see family and friends.I count myself lucky really as at least I have the choice. My friend has M S and has been given an electric wheelchair by fund raising mates. As you say it is a real shame that people have to rely on charity.

I have muscular dystrophy and I also own a business. If I was confined to my home in a manual wheelchair I would not be able to run my business or make the six figure income that I make. I end up paying tens of thousands of dollars each year in taxes when I work.

Therefore the government would actually MAKE money by investing in power chairs for people like me. They could work AND live their lives! But if they don't pay for it and you can't hold a job, then you'll never have have that opportunity!
