I tried to get a wheelchair user onto a bus today. why was it so difficult? |
first and second bus, the ramp would not deport. third one held a woman who would not fold her buggy down even though it held only shopping!!!!! she did have the toddler in her arms but surely the bus driver should have shown authority and made room for the wheelchair. shouldnt he? By law.... yes they are supposed too, if next time you take public transport, something like that happens again, try to get the drivers name and the registration number of the bus he/she was driving......and also the time and date, then report them, because what they did was descrimination.....no more no less i agree. there is still a lot of ignorance and disrespect there for people with disabilities. why didn't you ask the bus driver for help though? in my experience you sometimes have to put people's noses into it politely and then they'll be as helpful as they can be. Our council is getting more Cabby's to have wheelchair capable vehicles, ok the fare is more than a bus but then a bus does not go door to door, the wheelchair users think it's a good service, maybe more councils should do the same. After having said all that, now just imagine yourself being the one in the wheelchair! Wheel chairs take priority over push chairs on buses.if it happens again take the bus number down and complain. Our buses here in south La. are designed for handicap situations. It was so cool when the hydrolics let the bus down to meet the curb. I wish my car did that for the elder people I have to pick up for church. yes in my area the bus driver can make anyone vaccate that space if a disabled person requires it. Even women with prams can be asked to move, generally though women with a very small child in the pram won't be asked because there is no where for her to go to. But that area is designed for a wheelchair user as a priorty. I was in a wheelchair for 4 years at the beginning of the 90's. When I took the bus some people were rude but some where nice. It sounded like you had a really bad experience. The worst experience pertaining to disability laws that I ever experienced was not on a bus, but rather a Taco Bell. this has happened to me lots to the law often seems to mean not a lot i still can not access my doctors sergary for example hope things get better |
