How does one weigh a person in a wheelchair? |
my 26 yr old son is a quad and is losing weight rapidly. we are having a hard time finding a way to weigh him. he's too heavy for me to lift. his dr advised us to go to a meat dept in our local grocery store. i was mortified that he would even suggest such a thing. i asked his staff if they could look into it and they really were no help at all. any suggestions? he weighs under 150 lbs at last check so he's not obese. also, uses a power wheelchair. A big hospital could have a roll-on scale to weight patients in wheelchairs (call and ask), and you could subtract the wheelchair weight. Or, if you have someone or yourself that can lift 150 pounds, and a bathroom scale that could accomodate that person and your son, you could do the same subtraction with them holding him. Many neighborhood vet clinics have scales in the floor for large dogs to walk on for weight. I would suggest finding one nearby your home and roll him on it in the chair, then weigh just the chair. The difference is his weight. You can try finding a medical facility that uses lift equipment to safely handle patients in similar conditions. That way your son can be weighed. Another suggestion would be a scale with a build in chair, the only thing is that you would have to transfer your son to that chair perhaps with a safety belt, a portable lift, or a sliding board. Nursing homes are another option as the usually have roll on scales and lifting equipment. |
