Just because you are bitten by a mosquito infected with West Nile, that does not mean that you will also become infected. If you do become infected with the virus, the common symptoms are a rash, fever, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue. Only in very few cases will the infection lead to encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the casing around the brain). These conditions can be fatal if not monitored closely. West Nile does not descriminate based on age, so everyone is equally likely to get it. The best way to prevent getting bitten by a mosquito carrying West Nile is to stay inside.
