West Nile Virus was first discovered in Uganda in 1937. In about 80% (ish) of people, infection causes no symptoms. In others, the virus causes mild flu-like symptoms known as West Nile fever, with symptoms including malaise, fever, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, eye pain, headache, myalgia (muscle aches), diarrhea, rash, and lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes). Symptoms develop 3鈥?5 days after infection, lasting 3-6 days (ish). It can particularly debilitating to the very young and the elderly. The most serious effects (less than 1% of cases) are encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord), So, your answer is yes. They can run a blood test to detect the WNV titer in your immune system to see if you actually had it.
