Weight training to look bigger. Weights first and then lose my fat? Or lose my fat first and then weights?

I'm 17 and weigh about 160 pounds and im about 5'11"

I'm not particularly fat looking and im not that strong either, but I think ultimately I have some fat to burn. I'm not sure about my body fat percentage but I'm guessing it's around 13%.

I my muscle to be visible and I want to build myself up a bit.

Just wondering if it would be best go for a cardio/diet program to get my weight and fat down and then weight train to gain muscle and bulk up. Or would it be best to go for a weight training program and keep my eating and excerise the same and then go on to lose fat?

I have a target from about 4 months from now, so any plans on what plan of action I should take for optimum building up and looking strong. (would like to have a visible six pack)

Currently I am on a fairly decent weight workout program and taking protein supplements. Just wondering I'm wasting my time if I'm going to need to possibly lose fat later on?

So whats the best plan of action? Thanks

okay when you go to the weight room start off...
running a mile or two
then bench press (3 sets)
ab work (sit ups, rainbows, piledrivers)
leg press
dunbell pushups (do a push up while holding the weights then lift it up)
curls like 20 with a 10 or 15 pound weight

Well, hardgainers, thats ppl who try to gain weight asap, do exactly that. They gain and bulk up fast. But no joke, they then burn off the fat doing cardio and stuff to get the final look they want. So thats one option. Good luck to ye.

if you do weights now you'll look strong but your weight wont change . its better to lose the fat because that can kill you. looking weak wont.

I don't think your bf 13% is you're thinking that you're not particularly fat, I would say it's closer to 18-20% but then I don't have a set of calipers here to test you. Get yourself tested and get a real value first.

Here's the deal when it comes to losing weight and putting on muscle, your body only wants to do one of these things at a time. That's not to say it's not possible to do, but it's going to take you that much longer to get it done.

If you choose the cardio route to lose the fat you will lose fat, but you will also lose muscle. There's no real way to avoid this short of taking an anti-catabolic which can interfere with the fat burning which defeats the purpose of doing cardio.

If you choose the body-building route then you will gain muscle but it won't do much in terms of dealing with the fat. You've seen large, muscular guys before that are still kinda fat looking. The reason is they're lifting all the time and not doing cardio.

So what's a guy to do?

Easy, do them both. It will take longer to lose the weight or gain the muscle than if you did one of them individually but in the long run it'll be faster.

Do a sort of day1/day 2 with the 7th day being a day of light cardio. On day 1, start with the cardio and keep your heartrate up as much as you can. Aim for an hour of workout time.

The next day, focus on some muscle groups. Let's day arms & back. Aim for three sets of 8 - 12 reps for each exercise and work all those muscles. Focus on your form and not how many you can do or how much you can lift. If you can't get through them all, you're trying to do too much and you need to lighten the load.

The next day, you're on cardio again.

The day after, you do weights but focus on another muscle group like chest & shoulders.

The next day do cardio once more.

The final day, focus on your legs. Abs can be done on every lifting day, they're strong muscles and can recover quickly.

On the 7th day, take a long walk, some light cycling or something that keeps you moving but doesn't put you out of breath.

Follow this for 3 months and you'l see a definite change.

You also need to eat properly during this time.

Eat clean, no junk. Eat quality lean meats and protein for your muscles, green leafy veggies and fresh fruits. Try to have a bit of a calorie deficit every day so if you normally take in 2500 calories, only take in 2000.

And finally drink a lot of water. This will help you to metabolise the fat you're burning and to flush some of the crap out of your system.
