Weight Loss Surgery---Opinions, experience, observations please.?

I'd like your observations, opinions, experience on weight loss surgery. For it? Against it? No opinion? And, why? Thank you.

I actually have mixed views on the issue. Being an ICU nurse in a hospital that does numerous gastric bypass surgeries every year I have seen good instances but I have also witnessed bad occurrences. I think personally that if it will give you a better quality of life then it would be something to consider but make sure you are fully educated on ALL complications and that your family completely understands why you are doing this and what could happen. I work with a few people that has had the surgery and some do their exercises and follow a good diet and has good self control BUT the others will eat like 4-5 hot dogs and pizza slices by the ton and they don't exercise and then they are sick the rest of the day and it's really sad to think that they went through so much to not try a lifestyle change for the better.

It's great as long as you follow doctor's orders. Sometimes you can actually get too thin. But it does help with certain health issues.

A 400 lb woman goes to the doctor to discuss the benefits of a gastric bypass surgery---rather than taking the responsibility for her body is she going to put that responsibility on someone else.....

It used to be the diet pills that were "in". I can still remember all those commercials for them, in particular Dexatrim. ReDux was a diet pill that signifantly helped people lose weight--and also triggered heartattacks in some....again, rather than taking responsibility for themselves, obese people went to a doctor: the pill can fix it society I call it.

Gastric bypass surgery might be a solution for cases where there is no excessive food intake but still too much weight. The news not too long ago announced that it was found that only very few people who are seriously overweight/obese can really blame their genes. Most simply get overweight/obese from unhealthy eating habits and taking responsibility for that--changing their way of eating and changing their lifestyle(add more exercise for example) would be a much better thing than the surgery. Any surgery bears a huge risk and even though gastric bypass surgery is hailed as a solution, it does have a lot of risk---any surgery has a risk. I feel that it is more important to change a lifestyle than to seek a "quick fix". Permanent change requires hard work, and that requires that I take responsibility. If something goes wrong with the gastric bypass the surgeon can be blamed, but if something goes wrong because I try to change my eating habits, well, then I don't have anyone to blame but myself. It is all a matter of the mind over the body, a lot healthier not to get surgery, and guess what? The sense of achievement one gets when one has achieved his/her goal of losing a lot of weigth cannot be replaced.

its a very good surgery for weight loss. i have seen tremendous results--within the first year itself.but as a doctor,i must tell you that lap band surgery is an equally good option,you just have to have a little control on your diet>and now a days its so cheap to get the surgery done in India.My aunt got it done in India and she paid just 7000$ or so --and she had a wonderful experience with this company that made her all the arrangements.It was like a vacation for her in a 5 star hospital.hope the link mentioned below helps-its the link of the company i mentioned to you about

I am "for" weight loss surgery as a tool to use...It helps those with severe obesity where diets have failed. However, the candidate has to be in the right place for it to work. The surgery will help with the physical hunger, however it does not deal with the being emotionally or "head" hungry.
The person who is going forward with surgery must be ready to change their lifestyles on several levels, this is not an easy way out.
Diets do not work for a majority of persons who are 100+ lbs overweight...for many there are underlying issues, emotional eating, addictions, etc. This things also have to be dealt with for the surgery to be successful.
