Why is it ok to eat merely 4 oz when having a weight loss surgery, but not any other time?

Eating 4-6 oz of food is in no way going to give someone the amt of calories or nutrients one needs to live, so why is it ok to do that when having surgery and would it work just by eating 4-6 oz a meal for a few months?..

I had Weight loss surgery in October. You don't just eat 4-6 oz for a couple months. You eat that way for life. You can't eat more than that at one time due to the size of the "new" stomach. Eating more than that would make the pouch explode or stretch. I eat a 1/2 cup of food every 2 hours. I take a multi-vitamin and calcium supplements. I've lost 60 pounds in 10 weeks. It's not easy. You have to work out constantly. I personally walk 5 miles a day right now. I eat 800 calories a day but it's WHAT you eat that makes the difference. Low cal, HIGH protien, low sugar, low carb. Because the stomach is connected lower in the small intestine, food is not absorbed the same way as before surgery. That's why we have to take Multi-vitmains (Flintstones chewables) and calcium supplements. I am not mal-nourished. The people I have met that have also had surgery are not mal-nourished. Just happy.

EDIT: WLS is not a "shortcut". You have to work just as hard at losing weight than without having the surgery. I've been overweight all my life. I dieted for TWENTY YEARS and lost and gained the same 20 pounds over and over and over and I'm only 31! I decided that for my health I would have surgery to help me lose weight. I wanted to be around to see my son marry and have children of his own. I was 100 pounds overweight now I'm 40 pounds overweight. WLS is not a shortcut but a tool for weight loss. If you have never been overweight than you will never know the pain. I was made fun of for being fat and now I'm made fun of for having surgery to take care of myself.

People will do some pretty extreme things to themselves to lose weight.

It's funny. I can 100% guarantee that you will lose weight, and keep it off, if you just eat right and exercise. But still, people have surgeries to make their stomachs smaller!!!!

bet its because you want to be easy on the stomach while it heals....
weight loss surgery.... shortcut

Yes, eating 4 oz is enough to sustain life, but not stay healthy. The majority of people that have weight reduction surgery suffer from malnutrition, and have to take plenty of multi-vitamins in order for them to get the required vitamins and minerals their body needs.
Another thing is that they have no choice but to eat small portions like that or they become physically ill. And they need to eat that way for life.

The reason that people eat 4-6 oz after having weight loss surgery is because of the new size of the stomach.

To supplement the lost nutrients, WLS patients need to take vitamins for the rest of their life. Also, they need to get bllod work done every 3 months for the first year after surgery to see where they may be lacking nutrients. Once the nutrients are adjusted, blood work needs to be done annually.

People that have WLS eat every 2-3 hours to keep their metabolism working.

Actually, eating 4-6 oz of food in one sitting is at the low end of what is recommended by the FDA. We are used to seeing huge portions when we go to restaurants that anything less than that is considered an extremely small portion.
