Should the govt fund free weight loss surgery for obese diabetics?

Should the govt fund free weight loss surgery for obese diabetics?

It's news to me that Medicare funds weight loss surgery. Not according to my Medicare Handbook. Maybe Medicaid does but I doubt it.

I've always hoped that Medicare would fund surgery to get rid of the hanging flesh after the patient has lost weight on their own.

Congress considered surgery for obese diabetics but it didn't get anywhere.

They do now if they can make it to medicare age.

Not as a rule. Type 2 diabetics are diabetic because of poor eating choices/habits throughout a lifetime. I should not pay for a non emergency surgery for someone who chooses not to eat healthy.

Do you live in the US or another country with free health care? I would say definitely not in the US ... people with more serious problems are dying here every day. But in another country with gov't funded health care ... I still say no. A diabetic who doesn't learn to exercise and control their diet is going to die an early death no matter what their weight is. It's critical that people like that learn how to take care of themselves and do it.

No, considering that a healthy diet and exercise does the same job...without surgery and dangerous side effects and complications.

Lap band surgery, etc. is not a quick fix for weight loss and instant health.

People need to unlearn their bad habits, and learn how to make healthy choices.
