I broke my foot, the doc gave me a cam walker instead of a cast...Shouldn't I have a cast on for it to heal?

I wrap my foot with an ace bandage. I don't sleep with the cam walker on. It has been broken for a month and a half now. It still hurts like crazy. I also use crutches. My fingertips get numb after walking around with the crutches, I think I may have pinched a nerve.

I know it is weird but the dr. did the right thing it will hurt for a long time if you can get along with out the crutches then do not use them all the time and yes you could have a pinched nerve hang in there there is a light at the end of the tunnel

re confer with dr

You need to talk to your doctor about this, ask him why you don't have a regular cast. He is the one with the medical degree.

I broke my foot last year and they gave me the same thing. When I asked about it I was told that I should not put much weight on the foot so no heel because you will tempted to walk on it more. It must set properly or it will not heal properly

Here's the thing, doctors go to school for this a lot longer than most people. Although it seems as though some doctors are dumb, a majority of them truly know their stuff. Depending on the type of break, severity iof break and location of break, a cast is not always need or helpful. It hurts because it's healing and you tend to baby an injury. When you baby something you think about it too much and rely on other muscles around it. It's common, but don't worry, he knows what he's doing. If not, sue him like the rest of americans do.

Are you using an orthopedic doctor or podiatrist? Their treatments vary drastically. I would go see a podiatrist. I think you need to be in a hard cast because the cam walker you can take off, you need something that will not be removed. Also ask about a bone stimular, I have used them one several of my patients, some it helped some it didn't also there could be a chip of bone in your foot that needs to be removed. Pain is the key, until I could speak to my doctor I would stay off my foot as much as possible. Pain medicine only masks the problem your body is telling you something is not right. I still would go see a podiatrist though. Good luck. It does take time for bone to heal.

I recently broke my foot for the second time.I was casted both times for 2 weeks. They wanted to recast this time but I just could not deal with it.My doctor told me the cast does not stabalize the bone. They cast it so you will not walk on the foot.I am now without a cast or walking boot.I am not allowed to put weight on it.I hope to toss the crutches in 2 weeks, with doctor approval.Good luck and I hope the break heals quickly for you.I had to have surgery the first time I broke my foot and have a bone graft and a screw put it.
