How can I find a GP that specialises in the health problems I suffer from?

I suffer from hypothyroidism and vulvodynia and my current doctor, though competent, is not very informative or sympathetic. I'm also not that comfortable being examined by him, but there is no female doctor at the practice and I don't want to change doctors without knowing I'm going to someone better. Any suggestions? Is there another way to get access to womens health services?

I already have a specialist who I see once a month, but I still want a GP who understands all my health problems and can give me better day to day advice.

GP stands for General Practitioner so finding one who actually specialises in anything is unlikely. You could try to find a GP who's sympathetic and interested in your condition by asking your specialist for a recommendation. Remember, you'll be limited in which GPs you can attend because most only serve certain areas so finding someone you're comfortable with and who's willing to research your conditions is probably a more realistic aim.

Many GP practices operate a well woman clinic that specialise in women's health problems and give patients the opportunity to see a female GP or practice nurse. If your practice has this service you could try it to see if it suits you better. If your practice doesn't operate a well women clinic you could phone your local health board and find a surgery that does offer that service, and you'll probably find the GPs there are more geared towards women's health issues. A female practice nurse may be able to recommend a female GP at a nearby survey so it may be worth chatting to them.

You can't that's why they're called General practitioners, you need to see a specialist for a specific condition.

Some GPs do list their special interests on their practice leaflets. Most of us do have some area of special expertise, but that information is generally not published.
