Request a Hysterectomy??

I have been having some pretty serious "woman" problems, such as chronic pelvic pain and inflamation, extremeley heavy periods and painful periods, vulvodynia, etc....they can't seem to find a cause for the pelvic pain and inflamation, all my cultures came back negative and my pap smear came back abnormal with moderate to severe dysplasia...I go in for a colposcopy and biopsy tomorrow...I have 3 children and had a tubal ligation in June, my question is can I request to have a hysterectomy to my doctor? I really think that it would help with my symptoms...and I already have children...my sister had an emergency hysterectomy at 23 because she developed cervical cancer....would my doctor consider this or is it something they only do as a last resort?

I feel your pain Smooches. I had a tipped uterus, that was also twice the size, of a normal uterus. I also had extremely heavy, painful periods ... and I'm talkin' PAINFUL. I was usually curled-up, in a fetal position ... the pain was soooo bad. I had adhesion's on my uterus and bound my fallopian tubes to the back of my bowel. I only had one ovary left, as the other one had a dermoid cyst, which had burst, then hemorrhaged ... so, in effect ... anything that could go wrong with a woman's reproductive system ... was wrong with mine.

I only had to ask my OB/GYN once ... and he had me booked for surgery. If your in extreme pain, and no longer wish to have more children ... there's absolutely no reason, for you to suffer. Ask your doctor ... and if he won't help you, seek a second opinion. Good luck, I hope everything works out for you .....

You can always request it of your doctor, but it doesn't always mean that they will do it....But some will consider it if you are having quite a few problems. BTW, good luck with your surgery. The colposcopy & biopsy is a very simple surgery. I've had to have that one done myself.

Don't do it if you don't need to. Hysterectomy really should be reserved for cancer treatment. Doctors won't probably do it unless you really have to. And hysterectomy have been performed more than it needs to be. There were lot of stories on it past year.

- A hysterectomy doesn't guarantee you won't get cancer.
- Your body will enter Menopause as soon as your ovaries get removed (if you're talking full hysterectomy).
- I suggest, that before you make such a momentous decision, you consult with a Familial Cancer clinic/specialist. They would be able to determine if you're genetically predisposed. Based just on your sister, it's hard to say, but if cancer goes back generations in your family, and occurs in "young" ppl, then there's a good chance. They will take a small sample of your blood, and also from your relatives who consent. This is a good thing to find out not only for you (why have such a life-altering operation if it won't help) but also for your children.

If I were you I would ask the doctor to look at possible endometriosis. A lot of your symptoms are classic for it. Hysterectomies do not always fix the problem. I would exhaust every measure before that.

I agree, endometriosis sounds very likely. If that is the case, they can laser off the inside lining and outside lining of your uterus. This is less invasive, and less painful and may solve your problems. Good luck! Sounds like you need to talk to your doctor, and if s/he doesn't listen, go to another one. "Women" problems are serious and don't need to be pushed under the table.
