What to expect after surgery for pre cancer?

I have pre cancer of the vulvar the dr told me that two weeks ago.
I am going back to him on Monday to disguss the surgery and what is going to happend..What can I exoect after the surgery? Will
I have to do chemo and radtion if the cancer is only pre cancer..

Hi. I have had two surgeries, laser and a wide local excision, for VIN 3 (Vulvar Intraepethelial Neoplasia) or severe vulvar dysplasia. If you just have pre-cancerous changes as it sounds like you do you will not need chemotherapy or radiation, that is saved for invasive vulvar cancer.

Treatment for VIN depends on the severety of precancerous cells. Many times doctors will choose to monitor you closely for VIN I and II, VIN III is the stage right before invasive cancer so it is usually treated with a chemotherapy type cream, laser surgery, or an excision to remove the diseased tissue. However, VIN is usually caused from HPV so it can recurr again even after surgery, they can remove the VIN, but not the HPV.

We have many kinds of after surgery tips on our website (below) - you can also join one of our support groups or read about other ladies that have had the surgery. We have a lot of members there with vulvar dysplasia so we would love to have you!

Good going. Sounds like your problem was caught in time. One step at a time. Get through the surgery, get your strength back. Whatever treatment necessary you will get through them. At this point of your situation things are darn scary. Whatever is right for you the Drs. will lead through. Please try to just focus on what your dealing with at the moment. You may be worrying more then you need to & that could effect your recovery. Good Luck!
