Vomiting caused by anxiety? Or something else?

Hi. I am a 20yo guy from Australia.

About 10 months ago I *randomly* got some strange 'illness' that made me lose sensation in my limbs, get a racing heart, caused severe nausia, near fainting and then vomiting which gave relief to all symptoms immediately.

My doctor thought it might be because of my excessive comsumption of cola that contains aspartame, or the hot weather & a electrolyte imbalance or because I'm underweight, maybe even a virus. The three times this happened I had nothing at all to be anxious about -life was groovy.

A few weeks later I started a course at what Americans call a 'Community college'. On the first day there my arms started to lose some feeling and then I vomited. I felt relieved but later in class my arms lost some feeling again. If I tried 2 eat I'd vomit within 5 minutes. Sumtimes 1 bite of anything would make me vomit.

Now recently I started a new job and vomit if I try to eat breakfast. Non-work days are fine. Is this a anxiety problem?

Sounds like it. You may not realize it but stress and/or anxiety could be the cause and can usually be relieved if you regularly exercise at least a couple of times a week. Backing off of the cola will help also. The caffeine intake can really mess you up as well as the aspartame...especially if it is pretty hot outside.

Sounds like you are on your way. Good luck! Report It

If I was your doctor I would be treating your for anxiety. But as a person I would get off the coke. Which by the way is a drug but onlly like coffee so get off it slow as you will have headaches and withdrawl symtoms. This is not a good thing for anxiety. When symtoms occure try counting backwards fro 60 to 1 If you are finding any relief at all from this then you more than likely have anxiety. Take some sort of sent with you that makes you feel better. everyone has a sent from there past that helps. with me it is cardamom. A seed used for baking. some it maybe baby shampoo. And also eat as much as you can when you can. to try to gain the wight you need. prbably night time is a better time as you are more comfortable.

I'd go back to your doctor and tell him this wasn't a virus and that it's still going on.

Be sure to tell him how long you've been experiencing this, what triggers it, if you literally vomit, whether or not you feel fine afterwards, etc...

Something else may be wrong. Losing feeling in your limbs is not normal.

maybe you have some problems with your digestive system... my mom have patients like that... they vomit everytime they try to eat...

You gave a bit of information that enables me to make a somewhat educated guess:
1. Since your vomiting and feeling-loss experiences were present in 3 non-related, geographically different situations, as in, I assume at home at first, then community college, then a job place - it would sort of rule out an environmental factor.
2. Your doctor told you it may be due to your overconsumption of diet colas - have you stopped consuming these?
3. In any of these situations, are you aware of your body's needs BEFORE your body 'balks' at you? In other words, are you in a habit of eating regular healthy meals and getting sufficient sleep?
So, if you feel more relaxed during times that you're not interacting with other people or having responsibility of a job, it SEEMS as though your body's reactions are concomitant with these situations.
Yes, you could call it 'anxiety', but that term is rather reserved to a general state of fear - not one that is related to specific situations.
If your physical reactions are actually respondent to your location or situation, I would rather call them examples of 'phobias', and these can be severely hindering for people.
If I had this situation, I would consult a hypnotherapist or NLP practitioner and see if this sort of therapy could eliminate this nasty, hindering tendency and instead open up a life with more freedom and joy.
I am in email contact with a great guy in Sydney, Byron Stuart, and if you want, you can contact me through my website listed as 'source' below for more information and perhaps a referral, should you desire it.
Remember this: labels are seeking causes with not a necessary improvement. Just because you have an explanation for your problem does not make your problem go away, but rather, a lot of time, reinforces it by giving it a valid 'reason'.
Seeking an outcome, seeking a 'what you want' rather than reinforcing 'what you do not want' is a better application of your time and energy.
