Vitiligo cure...a shot?

I had someone tell me that their son had vitiligo on his face, and she took him to a doctor, the doctor gave him a shot of something on the affected area on his face, and then she noticed his color came back, and he never had discoloration after that shot. But she doesnt remember what the doc gave her son. Has anyone ever heard of something like this? I thought vitiligo was something that couldnt be cured. Please help.

I work in dermatology and there is NOTHING, no shot that makes vitiligo be cured like that. There is no shot that can be given to make the color come back.

There are some topical treatments that can be applied such as a medication called Protopic which is used to treat eczema that has been shown to aid in the Slowing of the progression of Vitiligo and in some cases can restore the pigment in the skin however not all cases does this occur, only in a small percentage.

Sometimes in a few cases you can do something that is called a Punch Graft. Where you take a small punch of skin from a healthy pigmented area of the body (close the area with a small suture...and then take OUT a small punch of skin of the Vitiligo effected area..Dispose of the vitiligo specimen and replace the punched out area with the Healthy pigmented skin..you will then put in a small suture (stitch) to hold it in place and sometimes with luck over time the healthy pigmented skin will graft to the damaged Vitiligo effected skin and cause the pigment to "bleed" and spread through the area that lost the pigment so that the area without color now regains color again....Again it doesnt work for everyone..

There is not a known CURE for vitiligo, just a few treatments that can sometimes be effective but nothing that is known to work for everyone. I have been in dermatology for 10 years and I have never heard of any injection that makes the color come back.

idk
