Vitamins & supplements, when to take, how to take, what to take in combination?

I take a LOT of supplements. As soon as I see a story on a particular vitamin, mineral or other supplement, I go out and I buy some and then use it for a few days/weeks. But I feel as if I'm wasting my money because I don't really see any difference in how I feel.

I'd like to know if there are particular times of day that it's best to take certain supplements. What vitamins I should take with food and what type of foods in particular. What vitamins/supplements I should not take together. What vitamins/minerals/herbal supplements are recommended for a woman in her 40's with a mild thyroid problem.

Finally, which supplements will have the most impact on energy and brain function. I eat relatively healthy - no fast food, little junk food, lots of fruit, veggies and fish. I exercise as much as I can, but often have little energy or motivation. I'm 20 lbs overweight, but feel it may be due to missing nutrients because at times, I have incredible bursts of energy. Any suggestions??

Supplements can be beneficial if taken in moderation. You'd probably do best to take a multivitamin on a daily basis and then try one thing at a time for at least 3 weeks at a time, preferrably 6 or 8 to really know if the supplement is helping. Pay attention to whether your energy bursts are related to caffeine or sugar intake OR if they are related to your moods, that is a typical thyroid symptom.

I hate to latch on to a side note in your question, but you have two major concerns as far as your energy goes. The first is a thyroid problem even if minor can cause you to feel really sluggish. I have an enlarged thyroid myself which tests on the low side but normal. I take a small dose of thyroid medication (to hopefully take the stress off and slow the growth of the gland) which helps me to feel better as well. If you have a doctor that recognizes the problem, you should definitely pursue treatment. That alone might help you lose some weight and feel better. Second, exercise is probably more important than the vitamin supplements. You simply need to walk on a regular basis, if you can fit in other exercise too, great. I have lost 37 lbs in the past year and I feel so much better, I had no idea that I even felt so bad! Exercise is the key to feeling great, supplements are a side note.

BTW As far as supplements go, if you can convince your body its food it will get absorbed better and you will get more benefit from it.

Liquid vitamins

make all the difference

You should consult your doctor about this.

I feel like you. I've taken lots of different vitamin supplements. And some have worked and some haven't. What I've learned is that it is better to give a supplement at least a 30 day trial to truly start seeing the benefits. Also, liquid vitamins are usually better absorbed in your body than pills. I've finally found a complete liquid vitamin and essential mineral supplement that I love! It makes me feel better overall. More energy and less cravings. It's called Vemma and I get it online at www.TheSecretNutrition.com. It even has a 100% money back guarantee if it doesn't work for you within the first 30 days. Ugh. I sound like a commercial. Sorry. I am just so thrilled that I feel better, and I'm saving money because I'm not buying and trying tons of supplements now. Also, I want to mention something about the thyroid. As a suggestion, I highly recommend treating yourself to a day at the spa or some other treat to relax. Thyroid problems can be exacerbated by stress. Relax and be good to yourself.
