I have to talk to my father?

I am in counseling for reasons that are becoming apparent.

I am a 37 year old male, who life is really not that bad, I got promoted twice this year, and then changed jobs, to almost triple my income within a year. Not to shabby

I got married this year to my best friend, after 4 years of dating.

Another plus right.

Well in Oct there was an act of violence committed against me, which threw me through a loop. Several young men attempted to rob me after hitting me in the head with a pipe.

Thank heavens they were unsuccessful, although in many ways they were. My life since that moment has dramatically changed.

I am on anti depressants now
I am in therapy for Post traumatic stress disorder, which actually stems back 15 years to my military service.

Let鈥檚 cut to the chase here, that time was wild; I was a specialist in the service and saw my share of violence.
Well my head cannot deal with it now, and as part of the treatment by doctor would like for me to relate to my father, what I have been through, she feels it will help me to heal.

What do you people think?

yeah i see your points, maybe i should clarify some, too

she would like for meto let him know about my life, the whole damn thing all the violence i have seen, all the rage, the hate and anger i have seen in this world.

I know it may seem odd to some, although my shrink seems to think i have seen more than my share.

My best frined dies in my arms in a combat zone that never happend, i lost three more firends in combat areas that the US was "never in"

she wants me to tell him the horrors i live with, why the f**k would i do that to anyone let alone my dad

Seeing how she is the therapists I'd say do it!!

I don't understand what the father part is about, but I think talking about it with family that you love. I think he would be able to help you think through things and he might even be able to help you look at things more clearly.

When ever faced with a decision that is not quick in coming...I usually decide to wait. My rule of thumb, if it's not a hell YES..then it's a hell NO. :o)

That being said...how do you FEEL about it? Only you can answer that. If it feels as though it will bring 'relief' then consider it...if it does not - then wait. Relief is what you are looking for at present - as when you find relief you are calmer and more in tune with what you really want.

Best to you and your progress.

Being that I have my own problems, and secrets that my therapist wants me to reveal I might sound like a hypocrit, but I'd say tell him. He should be understanding, especially since you were robbed.

I believe this would be a good thing. I bet he will understand.
The counselor probably feels it would be good to share with family and let them know how you feel and what you have been through, they probably don't know and don't realize.
Explain it all to him, a man figur and see what you get back, probably a big hug!!! You need to let it all out and not keep it inside.
If you can't tell him, that is what parents are for and they are there for you. Let it rip and go for it and let it pour out====

Do you feel safe with your father? You didn't say, so I am only guessing that there's hesitancy on your part is that you and he don't get along or something. You have a lot of good things going for you, right? Do you think that opening up to your father (and mother perhaps?, but you didn't mention her) would be a way to manage your feelings and fears so that you could feel better and get away from negative thoughts from the past? Talk therapy can be very powerful. Good luck!

I'm not quite sure what yor father has to do with anything unless you live with him or he watches your kids or something...

But, anyway, if you are just trying to pass info to him I would recommend that you and your therapist write down your experiences and give your dad the writing.

Do you speak to your wife about this? It seems to me that your wife should be in the position that your shrink seems to be putting you dad in?????

Not that I have a phd or anything, I've just been through something somewhat similar.

Have you guys been doing desenstization? That was REALLY helpful for me anyway.

Also, keep in mind that the great state that your life is in right now has no connection to the PTSD symptoms. It is a seperate issue all in it's own and won't get better just because your life does. Just stay in treatment and remember that not everthing works for everyone and if something isn't working for you, tell your shrink so you don't waste your time.

Congrats on the wedding and I hope you feel better.

Perhaps because he is another man who would see things different that a woman and also because he loves you and would be concerned for you. Have you asked her why she thinks this is a good idea?
