Are there any new medicines or procedures for patients unable to wean off ventilators ?

I assume you are talking about a medical ventilator that is keeping someone alive. I don't believe there have been any new advances in medicine or procedures. Unfortunately, some patients never are able to wean themselves off a vent. At some point, it would be wise to honor the patient's wishes. If he/she has a living will and it states that after a certain amount of time, he/she wants to be taken off the vent, then those wishes should be carried out. I am not advocating giving up hope, but after several months if the patient is not improving, then someone needs to be realistic about recovery and quality of life. Living for years on a ventilator isn't living. The longer someone is on a vent, the more difficult it is to remove them from it and get a positive result.

Thanks. Report It

no, if your dr. pescribed them then stay on them
