Why peep is used in ventilators?

Why peep is used in ventilators?

PEEP=peak end-expiratory pressure. It is one of the ways in which mechanical ventilator is set.
It refers to the pressure which when reached after expiration (exhalation), should the ventilator provide an inflation again.
Basically, it helps in keeping the positive pressure that the respiratory tract (and hence the consequent damge that it experiences) to the minimum.

Hope this helps. Bye. TC.

PEEP and CPAP are used interchangeably but are different.

First CPAP... Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. In this case CPAP provides a minimum positive pressure at all times to keep lungs inflated and fluids down. People suffering from sleep apnea/snoring are often prescribed CPAP machines to keep airways open and reduce the incidence.

PEEP... Positive End Expiratory Pressure is a mechanical way of preventing you from pushing all of the air from your lungs when you exhale. It does this by resisting exhalation like when you breathe out through pursed lips. It does the same basic thing as CPAP but from the opposite side; one pushes in the other resists out.

Hope that explains it?

Cheers

Same but different and interchanged incorrectly.

to answer your question, it helps increase/improve oxygenation.

PEEP is positive end expiratory pressure. In lay terms, when you breathe out, it holds a little bit of pressure in your lungs so that you don't exhale all the way. It helps to reinflate collapsed air sacs, and increase the amount of oxygen in your blood. Normally only a small amount of PEEP is used because it can decrease the ability of your heart to pump blood. The amount of PEEP to be used is determined by getting an arterial blood gas- or ABG, and looking at the PaO2- or amount of oxygen in the blood.
