How often does a home breathing ventilator need to be serviced?

Does anything have to be cleaned on the unit or filters changed or cleaned?

I notice that my nostrils are black when I leave the trailer of one person who has one. They have gas heat too, furnace is 10' from the ventilator.

I work as a staff nurse in the intensive care unit and those ventilators in my unit will be routinely serviced once in 6 months by the bio-medical experts.
It might be worth to ask the manufacturers of the ventilator regarding the frequency of the service that your ventilator requires or a Respiratory therapist can help you in this matter.
