Can I GAIN weight with a vegetarian diet?

K, so i eat meat all the time, but never gain a pound, so i figure if i go veggie i can eat a lot more. What do you think? I wanna gain muscle while working out too.

Thanks

I would say it "depends". Regardless of the diet you are on, the more calories you consume, the more weight you will gain.

Being a vegetarian means you'll likely get more of your calories from carbohydrates (and less from fat and protein). Depending upon how well you digest carbohydrates will certainly play a part in determining if you gain weight.

If you are working out, you certainly need protein. While you can get enough from being vegetarian you will likely have to use supplements if you are serious about gaining weight. Soy and whey protein powders are vegetarian and can aid you in getting more protein in your diet.

If you are concerned about gaining weight and muscle, be sure to track your food intake on a website such as http://www.fitday.com. It is free. You should shoot to take in about 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight if you are serious about adding weight / muscle.

A vegetarian diet can be extremely healthful, so do not be swayed from it's benefits. Generally, there is no problem for getting your fiber and vegetarians have lower incidences of cancer and heart disease.

You can gain weight on any diet. Vegetarian would be a lot harder to gain weight, but I think that automatically assuming you can eat "a lot more" isn't the right way to go. Some foods, like avocados and many nuts, have just as much fat per ounce if not more than many meats. If you want to gain muscle on a veggie diet, you're would have to get alternative protein sources, like tofu or power grains like amaranth, depending on whether you're going to be an egg/cheese vegetarian or not.

you are completely wrong. Going veggie means you will eat more carbs and definatly gain weight. My friend was super skinny then she went veggie a gained like 25 pounds. no joke. if you want to gain muscle, you need meat. The more protein you eat the more muscle you will build.

I often wondered why vegetarians look so pale and pokey or sickly, because they are not sticking to the right or eating right.
Over compesating by eating the wrong things more mild and cheese that has fat in it because you are craving the your hunger.
They say that you need more nuts and whole grain bread. more fruit and veg. Not just lentils and brown rice and tofu.
Otherwise not that " sawdust" food , soybean hotdogs and meat substitutes. A way of compensating.
fOODS LIKE SEAWEEDS, HAVE THAT SAlty flavour that your missing from meat and gravy. Other spices.
A question of changing your whole taste palette.
