Vitamin Deficiency in Vegan Diet? |
Hi, I'm considering becoming a vegan (it's a conscience thing. Eating animals just doesn't feel right anymore). Congrats on wanting to go vegan it would be the best decision you have made! It really is not difficult at all, you can get all the nutrients you need from a vegan diet. But, like you said B12 has some controversy around it, some take a B12 supplement, but most vegans I know do not take a B12 or any other supplement and are extremely healthy. For information on vegan nutrition & read the more in depth article which talks about B12, go to: Philly cheese steak... hmmm make sure to eat milk and eggs. this will take care of your b12 and other vits that comes from animal. it ain't that hard to go veggie. i have gone kosher and halal for couple of years now. those veggie burger patties are pretty good. Becoming a vegan is tough. You can take vitamins but you still have a risk of a vitamin deficiency. You could become very unhealthy. I suggest that you remain a vegetarian or even have some meat in your diet. The animals that are used to make food are born for that purpose. If everyone were a vegan, there would be no circle of life. You can take vitamin B 12 supplements so it shouldn't be a problem for you while on a vegan diet. And I commend you for having a consciousness towards the pain and suffering of the animals that are slaughtered just so someone can have beef, etc. at the dinner table. It's not that hard to change over to a vegan diet. But planning is important. There are some great books out there on being a vegan you should read, especially by John Robbins. It's easy to make a fruit salad and say oatmeal or granola for breakfast. And for lunch maybe a huge salad with all different kinds of cut up veggies such as broccoli, carrots, parsley, tomato's, avocado, cauliflower, plus salad greens with a topping of olive oil, apple cider vinegar and a squeeze of juice from a lemon or lime. And maybe a veggie burger too. And dinner, a nice homemade veggie soup, some quinoa (this is a grain high in iron) and fresh bread. You'll learn to snack on nuts and raisins or other dried fruits. Invest your money in a good juicer like "champion" and make fresh veggie juices with carrots, celery, apple and maybe beets. It's harder for the first couple of weeks, but I wouldn't say it's a "gargantuan effort". It gets real easy after that. The only thing I find difficult about being vegan now is dealing with people who aren't. |
