I've been a vegan for three years and I've broken a bone in my foot - is this likely to be because of my diet?

This is something I've been wondering about. I've been a vegan for just over three years, and I think I eat a fairly good diet, but the choice of food is very limited where I live and shop. The injury that caused the bone to break was very simple and didn't feel that serious. I've certainly had worse injuries and I've never broken anything before. I can't help but wonder if this is related to not eating dairy products. Does anyone know if vegans have a higher risk of breaking bones? Has anyone ever stopped being a vegan for this reason?

Well, if you've been a vegan for three years, how come you have not yet discovered that the human body really has no need for dairy products?

:o)

If it's calcium that you are worried about, eat kale and other dark leafy greens or sesame seeds. (sesame seeds are the most concentrated source of calcium on the planet)

No. You did not break your foot because you don't drink bovine mammary secretions.
Think about it...no other mammal on the face of the planet continues to drink milk after they have left infancy.
Only humans.
Milk is for the YOUNG of the species. Not adults.
And not from any species other than your own.

When you think of big, strong animals with strong bones and a solid, sturdy frame...what kind of animal do you think of?
Gorilla, Ox, Horse, Cow, etc?
Not one of those animals drinks milk as an adult.
They eat grass, leaves, alfalfa, hay, etc.
If you are looking for a reason to stop being vegan, just do what you want. You don't need an excuse.
It's your life, your choice.

But don't blame it on your lack of dairy.
Cuz that sure as hell isn't it.

i have not had any dairy products in 28 years and i havent broken a bone because of it..maybe you are not adding any calicum from other sources into your diet but most likely it was just a break..breaks happen sometimes from small things

Meat has a lot of readily absorb-able calcium, so I guess it's possible.

If you look at the over all nutrtion you miss from being a vegan breaking your foot could very well be cause of you diet. Milk like meat provides calicium and iron which helps bones stay strong.

Milk, it does a body good! What's your primary calcium source? Steak is calling... lol j/k. I could never be a vegan; i <3 steak and cheese and such. It could be just a bizarre break. I actually broke 2 bones in my hand from catching a football, just randomly, i've had much worse happen to me, such as having a 15 pound jar of pennies fall on my foot, nothing happened.

4 ounces of firm tofu has more calcium than in one cup of milk, so just eat your tofu.
