Vasectomy in a younger man?

I'm 23 and I am somewhat considering a vasectomy. I'm fairly certain that I never want to have kids. I have heard that some doctors recommend against having one at an earlier age, I guess because it's permanent and I may change my mind.

Does anyone know if there are any procedures/policies about a young man having one?

Also, if I wanted to have some sperm cryogenically frozen should I change my mind, is this at all practical, or will the sperm deteriorate over a period of time?

It doesn't sound like you are 100% sure you don't want children. Any good doctor will recommend that you don't turn to something permanent at your age.

I do believe you can have your sperm frozen and I don't think it it too expensive. I believe frozen sperm can last for a very long time. However the process to get someone pregnant in a lab may be expensive.

All of that would be something to ask a urologist. Until you are 100% without a doubt sure that you do not want to have kids, then you shouldn't do it. I believe at 23, you're too young to know that for sure. What happens if you meet the right girl someday, fall in love with her and she wants a baby? You may just change your mind...you never know. Just my opinion.

i guess its ok,as long as your wife dont want kids,but i think you can have your sperm frozen for later on,in case both of you change your mind about having kids,but why would you be considering this at a young age?

You are too young in my opinion and there are few advantages for you unless you are in a permanent relationship and your partner also agrees. Even then, circumstances can quickly change. Doctors have rules of thumb because the profession has carefully considered it. Speak to one.

I say this because I think your new lady partner will have a hard time believing you when you say.."oh no... I don't need to use a condom... it's OK because I have had a vasectomy"... "yeah right"... they reply.... as they re-zip their mini-skirt.

As for frozen sperm.. I think you need to be participating in an invitro program for them to be stored safely... you obviously can't keep them in the freezer at home next to the ice-cream.... and you will pay dearly for them to be commercially stored and insured.

Many doctors will ask you to reconsider until you're a bit older, but of course, you don't have to go with the first doctor you see. I encourage my patients to think about it for awhile, discuss it with family or friends, anyone close, and research the procedure as well as speaking with a professional who is experienced with the procedure.

Freezing the sperm is certainly an option as is vasectomy reversal surgery. It's much easier for a man to reverse a sterilization procedure than a woman. It's also more successful and less expensive than it is for women.

So long as you're comfortable and certain with your reasons for wanting the surgery, and understand that there is the possibility that it is NOT reversible, along with the possibility that you may change your mind later on... then I say go for it. Talk to your primary care physician, tell him or her what you're feeling and what your hopes/plans are for this procedure, and discuss your options as well as asking him or her for referrals to a surgeon who would be willing to perform the procedure (if your PCP doesn't perform general surgery).

It's an outpatient procedure and as long as you follow the surgeon's aftercare instructions, you shouldn't experience any adverse situations in the healing process. Just be sure to ask questions... about everything. If you don't understand, ask again. If they doctor is unwilling to answer in a way that you'll understand... RUN. This is YOUR body. YOUR choice. YOUR future. Take the time necessary to make an educated, informed, and intelligent decision.

There are many men your age who have made the choice not to have children. Although many would see it as irrational at your age, I see it as responsible and mature if this is something you really are adamant about.

We know people whose vasectomy has been reversed, so
it is possible that if you change your mind, you could have the surgery to reverse it. It is not 100% reversible for everyone.
Dr. Phil had a vasectomy, and he had it reversed when his wife wanted a second child.

I've heard that you should wait until you are over 30 to do this, unless there is a medical reason for you not to procreate.

When you're young it seems like a good idea. You know, stay young, keep responsibilities at bay, make romance more spontaneous and what not. Good times. However, women like babies. They may say no now because you're probably dating early 20 somethings, but one day when their friends start having kids, they're gonna want one too. Wouldn't it be totally fd up if you fell in love with some girl, and then she decides she doesn't want to be with you because you can't give her a baby? Or what if they really want one, and you can't give them one? Wouldn't you feel a little guilty about not being able to give them what they want? Anyway, these are just things to think about. I mean, I'm sure there are girls who really don't care and want to live some ubermench life without responsibilties or kids. But anyway, depending on your medical insurance, the procedure should be totally easy. It's short and painless as an outpatient surgical procedure. You'll spend a day at home just freaking sore with a swollen, tender scrotum, but at least you'll never have to worry about getting someone knocked up, and all the consequences that come along with it, right?? It's a heavy decision. Lots to think about.

many, many, many doctors will just not perform a vasectomy if you intend to cyrogenically freeze or otherwise preserve semen/sperm for later in vitro fertilization.

also doctors will need to make 100% sure that you absolutely definately want a vasectomy, kind of like when someone wants a sex change they have to live as a cross-dresser for a year in advance and whatever they do.

at your age, you may be able to make decisions this important, that you will not regret one bit, or you may not be able to.

i agree that you are too young, but if you decide to do it anyway, i think you should have some of your sperm stored just in case

I had a vasectomy at age 21. I have no children. That was the greatest birthday gift I could ever give myself 鈥?The freedom to have all the sex I want. How could I ever regret that? Nope, I can't!

I lied and told them that I already had a child. I doubt you will have success unless you do. They don鈥檛 ask your wife to come in, or ask for your kids names or anything. They only have some papers that you fill out, that has a blank where you write in the number of kids. You will go to some counseling. In my case it was a group of about 5 other men. Then a two weeks later you get your vasectomy. They try everything to talk you our of it. Keep in mind that I got mine done at a non-profit clinic.

There are no laws stating the required age, other than those that state that you must be 18 for elective surgery. The reason that clinics or doctors refuse to perform vasectomies on some men is their personal beliefs, or more often liability. So many men change their mind, and file law suits. What often happens is they go to get a reversal, and find out that they have too much scar tissue because the surgeon did sloppy work.

I paid cash for mine. It was $250, back in 1989. The novelty still has not warn off. I think it was the best decision I ever made.
