Vasectomy, where to begin?

My husband and I are ready for him to get a vasectomy, but don't know where to begin. Does he just go to the regular doctor first?

As others have said, your primary for a referal, unless you know a good urologist. We happened to have a good one that was a relation by marriage, so I got better drugs than most, I think. I had valium for the drive there, demerol for the operation, and loracette for the week following. I barely remember it, and it certainly didn't hurt a bit!
Either way, it is an outpatient surgery that takes about 15 minutes, tops. He will swell a bit, and need to sit on ice packs at first, but not very painful. I did mine on fri and was back to work on mon. The only thing to really really pay attn to, is when they tell you no lifting for a week. Trust me, they mean it. I found out the hard way. I lifted something heavy on wed after the vasectomy, and bang, I had cantaloupes for testicles!!! Bad idea on my part, but I felt fine...So, like I said, he better listen to that part!

Ask his regualr doctor to recommend a good urologist, they are the ones who do more vasectomies than others.

yes, he will refer you to a specialist

He needs to go see a urologist. A urologist is a guy's version of a gynecologist. They'll explain all the risks and responsibilities from there. Your primary can recommend a few to go see and your husband can have the surgery with whomever he's most comfortable with.

Good place to start. Your family doctor can recommend a
doctor, if he/she doesn't do the procedure themselves!

Best of luck!

Yes, go to a regular doctor. He'll recommend you to a surgeon, and take a sperm count sample for testing before, and he'll probably want to do several sperm count tests some weeks after as well. You can probably elect for either a local or a general anesthetic. Local worked just fine for me, with a little oxygen that came in handy. He'll be in and out of surgery in under a day, and will probably walk gingerly for a few days to a week, so I'd recommend some time off work. It's not overly painful, nothing that Panadol/Tylenol/over the counter painkillers can't handle.

planned parenthood does them on the cheap
they set up a appt to talk about it then a appt to actually do it.

After my vasectomy i felt like I had been castrated.
So a few years later I actually had it done.I was a lot better after.

If you have insurance, then he will need a referral to a urologist from a regular doctor. If you do this you might still have to pay a deductible, or 20%, or whatever.

In some cases you can call your insurance company, and they will have a list of urologists that they have agreements with. If you go the latter route then insurance may cover the entire surgery for free.

When I got mine, I had no health insurance. I just went to a non-profit clinic, and paid cash. It was $250 back in 1989. I am taking my friend to get his tomorrow afternoon and the cost is $600. He went to a non-profit clinic. He was referred by Planned Parenthood.

Your husband needs to see a urologist. Even if your "regular doctor" says he does vasectomies, go see a specialist!!!
When I was ready for my vasectomy, I spoke to several of my buddies who had already had the procedure done. That way, I could get feedback and a recommendation from somebody who had "been there, done that"! I suggest your husband do the same thing.
