Vascular Disease bybass surgery?

I have been diagnosed with severe pads, has anyone been through the bypass surgury in the legs, and how was the outcome?

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD), caused by systemic atherosclerosis, is vastly underappreciated despite its abysmal mortality rates. With 5 and 10-year rates of 30% and 50% respectively mortality due to PAD is greater than that caused by coronary artery disease and stroke.

Bypass surgery produces frequent and long-lasting patency and is therefore the gold standard interventional therapy for PAD.

The website below has a lot of information.

All the best.

It all depends on the surgery you have.

If you have PAD in the aorta or iliac arteries (in the abdomen/pelvis), you may need an aortobifemoral bypass. Big operation, 5-7 day hospital stay.

Blockages in the lower legs may need "fem-pop" or "fem-tib" bypasses. 3-5 day stay.

In the hands of an experienced vascular surgeon, the outcome can be quite dramatic. Patients that can barely walk to the mailbox begin walking a mile or more without stopping.

A couple of warnings. If a patient continues to smoke, the durability of the result goes WAY down. Sometimes the "target" vessels" the ones the bypass connects TO" are small. That's from genetics, diabetes, or just plain hardening of the arteries. Through no fault of the patient or surgeon, these bypasses have a shorter life.

In short, the odds are that you'll have a good outcome.

Good luck.
