My paternal grand father died because of CAD.What is the probability of me getting Cardio Vascular Disease?

My paternal uncle and aunt had heart attack

Heredity does increase your risk of developing CAD. However, other risk factors include hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), diet high in fat and salt, sedentary lifestyle (not enough exercise), smoking, age (the older you are, the more likely to develop), sex (men are more likely until the age of about 65 and then both sexes have an equal chance of developing), obesity, and stress.

Obviously you can't change your hereditary, sex, or age. But you can make other lifestyle changes that can lessen your risks. Stop smoking if you smoke, exercise at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes each session- hard enough so that it is difficult to carry on a conversation. Cut out foods high in fat and cholesterol, decrease sodium intake, if you have diabetes you should monitor your blood sugar and maintain a healthy weight and medical regimen, if you are overweight or obese lose weight in a healthy manner, try to eliminate or reduce stress in your life.

Just because you have a family history of CAD doesn't mean you will automatically get it. It only means you have a pridisposition to develop it moreso than others. Therefore you should be more conscious of your lifestyle choices. Try to make one change at a time to not overwhelm yourself. We all know these suggestions are already healthy anyway, it's just a matter of breaking the unhealthy habit that so many of us have become accustomed to.

Perhaps you do have a slightly raised chance of getting CVD than other people, but rememebr that you can change that by healthy lifestyle!! It's not all nature - it also largely depends on what YOU do.

You'll be fine! :) Stress less and eat right, exercise, be happy!

Perhaps genetic disposition is not as strong as learned eating habits in a family. If you would like to better understand the relationship between CAD, CHD and cancer as well as other diseases of American affluence, you can read a book by T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D. about this very subject. He states that they were able to give lab rats cancer, then heal them through a change of diet. They gave them meat products and the animals got cancer, changed the protein source to soy and the rats dissolved their tumors. Also, Dr. Esselstyn has done some extensive research in the field of CHD and CAD and has found some breakthrough information in regards to these diseases. He also has linked Coronary problems with the American diet.

You might want to read Dr. Campbell's book entitled, The China Study. By changing coronary heart patients diets to that of whole foods, and plant based diets, they have eradicated heart disease with no medications whatsoever. Dr. Campbell includes the studies of Dr. Esselstyn in his book to support his findings as well. It certainly makes for interesting reading. I know from my own experience as a diabetic and having high cholesterol readings (243) that this diet works. In the last six weeks, my cholesterol levels dropped so dramatically (128) that my Endocrinologist has taken me off Lipitor and my insulin usage has been cut to 1/3 the dosage that I was taking. We will continue to monitor my cholesterol levels, but I am convinced that they will never go up as long as I eat this way. I get to eat as many fruits and veggies as I want, as long as I'm hungry. Not a bad diet at all. I also eat rice, potatoes (the forbidden food!), and some wonderful whole grain breads, like Ezekiel sesame from Trader Joe's!

I hope this helps and answers the question that you asked.
Best of luck to you, my friend.

If it's genetic, very good chance! We have it back many generations on both sides of the family and all my siblings and myself have various problems!
