Saline drip forearm catheter caused my daughter's veins to turn white. Why? |
My teenaged daughter is in the hospital to receive I.V. meds. for a Crohn's Disease flare-up. She is on a "clear liquids" diet, so was also receiving saline/electrolytes via a catheter inserted in her left forearm. Within half-an-hour of the time the saline was started, the catheter vein "blanched". It was not raised, just white and tender. The nurses and vascular staff had never seen anything like it. They removed the catheter and started one on my daughter's right forearm. The same thing happened. The vascular staff removed it again. Now they are just pushing fluids by mouth and considering a PIC Line (Yuck!) No one (docs, nurses, vascular team) have any idea why this would happen. My daughter has had dozens of these things, with never a problem. All the other patients are receiving the same fluids, with no such reaction. Any ideas? none, sorry. i have never heard of this happening before. |
