A vaccination for the cancer causing virus for cervical cancer is now being given to women. Why not men?

If men also received the vaccination then cervical cancer could be irradicated and who knows, maybe prostate cancer in men?

There is SIGNIFICANT benefit in vaccinating men against HPV. They are the reservoir of infection. If you can prevent men from contracting HPV, then you'd protect a whole lot of women, too. Of course, let's continue to vaccinate women against HPV.

While HPV is not linked to prostate cancer, it is linked to penile, oral and anorectal cancers. And of course, men are susceptible to genital warts, too (which Gardasil protects against).

Currently, clinical trials are being done to evaluate the benefits of Gardasil in men. Just wait another year or so, and I'm sure the FDA will license it for use in males.

Because the FDA has only approved it to prevent cervical cancer as of yet. Could be something to look into though. Unfortunately men don't get to endure cervixes, uteruses, and the wonderful ovaries.

Anatomically speaking men would not benefit from this vaccine. Cancers are a cellular disturbance and not a sexually transmitted disease so giving this vaccine to men would do nothing in terms of eradication.

HPV (human papilloma virus) has not been shown to cause prostate cancer but has been linked to cervical cancer. Since the drug was tested on women for a woman's part (men have no cervix), it can not be given to men until there is a "medical reason" to test it on men. The way the FDA works is not necessarily what it best for people. Hopefully someone somewhere will think it important to vaccinate men for the virus as well.

Question good a man and woman give vaccination

http://www.kaisernetwork.org/daily_repor...

According to this article, studies are still being done on men and boys for the effectiveness of the HPV vaccine and Merck hopes to be marketing it to them by 2008.

Without stopping the spread of HPV in men, we can't hope to erradicate it in women.

Men don't have a cervix. The drug has only been approved for cervical cancer. Until testing shows that it prevent prostate cancer, it will not be approved for treatment in men.

hpv hasnt as yet been linked to prostate cancer, so it would be no benefit to men , however it has been linked to cervical cancer and as such it is beneficial to vaccinate women. I can see your logic however i guess it just wouldn't be cost effective to vaccinate men aswell

the reason is that the vaccine was not tested in men. In the US, the FDA is very strict about new medications, they must be tested before they can be used in the general population. BTW, it has nothing to do with the prostate. Vaccinating men would also help to cut down on the hpv disease since men spread it to women, that day will probably come but it is not today.

Joan you saw know how to bring them in.
A lot of good answers.
