25 Years ago, they use to only give one MMR vaccine at about 18 months of age. They started to notice an increase in high school age kids coming down with measles and mumps, so about 15 years ago they started requiring kids before entering middle school/high school to recieve a booster shot. Studies showed that the decline in the blood levels of the MMR antibodies actually starts about 5 years after the first shot is given. The decision was made to change the booster shot to be given about 4 years after the first vaccine.
