Does anything cause a thick uterine wall?

My mom had a very heavy period for 12 days. She thought it was menopause but when she went to the doctor he thought it was fibroids. So she went and had a vaginal and regular ultrasound. They said her uterine wall was to thick to see anything and now they are scheduling to scrape her uterine wall. Shes now afraid she has cancer because they keep telling her she needs to get this done as soon as possible. If anyone has had a similar experience or knows anything about it please respond. Thank You

It might be what is called 'endometrial cancer' (I guess that's what the doctors want to see with the scraping). It usually occurs after menopause.

Usually this is detected quite early and prognostic is very good. The usual treatment is the removal of the uterus, and if there are risks of recurrence (this is determined with the biopsy), radiation therapy, and more rarely chemo, can be given.

It might be benign also, but you know if it is determined that it is cancerous, the earlier the diagnosis, the better her chances, and she might not even need any other treatment than the hysterectomy.

My mom is in her menopause and also has this problem (with heavy migraines which she didn't use to have) and it is threatening to cause her anemia. In her case it is benign, but she is retested every 6 months for surveillance (this NEEDS to be watched, even if they find out it is benign). She is also a heavy smoker, and this is known to aggravate such problems (of course we try to stop her smoking... but she is our mom, you know, easier said than done...).
