I have chronic urticaria. have been on mizollen antihistamines for over a year?

just wondered if anyone in the same boat knows of anything that has helped.

I have had constant urticaria along with frequent bouts of angioedema (swelling of lips eyes etc) for a couple of months now so I sympathise if you have had to put up with it for a year. I take Fexofenadine (Telfast) every morning and I also take Hydroxyzine (Atarax) 3 times a day. These drugs have not got rid of the rash completely but it has reduced alot and the Atarax really helps to control the itching.

I agree with the posts which recommend that you look at your diet, preservatives etc are common culprits. I would also look at any other medications that you take. My dermy told me that I should avoid NSAID's if I can as they may aggravate the rash, even if I am not allergic. I take alot of other medication that unfortunaely I cannot stop taking. But you may want to consider seeing your GP for a medication review if you haven't already. It may also be time to change your Antihistamine as it may become less effective over time.

Can't say I know how you feel but it must be pretty miserable :(
The following site may help.

my boys also have chronic urticaria - its bloody awful isnt it?!! I cut out all additives from their food and cook all meals from fresh ingredients only. Reasonably plain but healthy diet (they are little boys with limited palates still!!). No soap or bubble baths etc. Go to www.lush.co.uk and buy some dream wash to use instead of soap and dream cream to put on your skin. It has made such a difference to the boys and now it is much better controlled.

Please try this wash and cream - it is totaly pure and wont do any damage at all. The boys only use antihistamines infrequently now and the above measures have made a huge difference.

Unfortunately, urticaria can be caused by many different allergens and it is unlikely to be the same for any two people. I also think that the allergens can change over time so you may be able to reintroduce certain things and exclude others.

Good luck.

I cant help you with this one my dear, I am not a licenced dermatologist

i suffered badly from this., hospitalised while on holiday, steroid injections.... the works.... and the only cure was high dosage, very strong antihistamines (the old fashioned type that cause drowsiness),,,, and my dermatologist advised avoiding spicy foods, acidic foods, and aspirin...... eventually it worked.... a long haul - but in the long run, worth it... try to get referred to a specialist. My own doctor did not give me strong enough antihistamines, and the specialist dermatologist told me, tat without more radical treatment, the condition becomes systemic.... do yourself a favour - and request a referral to a specialist......

I'm in the same boat and sometimes it seems to have no paddle the doc has me take a claratine every day and attarax as soon as i see a spot. but most of the time i always have a small hive or two. and i don't or cant be sleepy all the time(i have a 4 yr old)mines caused by stress so he put me on zanax1mg half in morning half in the evening. try to find out what triggers it. switch to baby or tide free laundry detergent. i only wash with baby wash. try taken away stuff to see if you notice any changes. if you have animal put them outside or up at a friends house for a week or to and clean carpet & uposterary. a steroid shot gets rid of mine when there out of control fowlled by a pack of them i dont like them but i put it off before and wond up in the er i was so swelled up head to toe that they couldnt see my veins the 5th time puting a i.v. in worked my veins kept blowing out. they gave me something for breathing i didnt know but i wasnt getting enough oxyegen. i can get serious. for instant relive take a room temp. bath with a oatmeal and 2 tbl spoons of baking soda. hope some of this helped
